Petty says he hasn't been in a race car in 25 years

The King has responded, and he's ready to race.

Richard Petty said on Friday that he will accept Tony Stewart's challenge to race Danica Patrick.

After Petty made some !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , alluding to a lack of driving talent, Stewart levied the challenge. And on Friday, Petty said he was game.

"I'm 76 years old, OK?" Petty said on the Fox New Channel's Fox and Friends. "It's been 25 years since I've been in a race car. But I'll take that challenge."

The hosts of the show even nailed him to it, saying "Really? You're going to do it, Richard."

And Petty doubled down. "Oh yeah," he said. "When is this going to happen?"

I guess we'll all have to wait and see…

I want to see this go down, but at the same time I feel like it'll be almost useless in terms of proving anything, as both sides have excuses they can pull out if they lose.

Let me get this straight...

Claim a driver has less talent and only gets attention because gender.
Proceed to give said driver even more attention anyway by coming out of retirement to race her.

Because that makes sense?

Fortunately for Richard Petty the technology has not changed MUCH since he last raced.

What's Danica's excuse? I'm a woman? Wouldn't that just prove Petty's point that she doesn't belong (not because she's a woman, but because she sucks - according to Petty). She can't say that she lost because he's the king, because he hasn't raced in longer than she's been racing. If an old man beats her with the reflexes that old men have, than she has no excuses. If he looses, he's got a crap ton. I don't really see the point in this race though, to me, she races everyday, and her results prove that she can't compete. I have nothing against women in racing, NOTHING. If any driver with as long as a career as hers, with so little podium finishes, I would say, find a new driver. Why race if you're not trying to win.

If it is raining that day Jimmie Johnson will still win.

No, but his body has. Dude's 76 years old. How many current NASCAR fans even saw him race? Reagan was president the last time he won.

I'm thinking the excuse would be that the man is a living legend for a reason. Can any other current driver can say they beat Richard Petty either? There's no real basis for comparison.

"Petty says he hasn't been in a race car in 25 years"

He may have been in a race car at a race track while in a race, but anyone familiar with his career will note that he hasn't actually raced in at least 30 years.

I'm not trying to begrudge any NASCAR fan. Just trying to be topical.

Reminds me of another young woman who thought she could beat an old master.

Yeah, I know he's going to lose and I know this smells of the WWE, but I don't care. I wasn't even in my teens when he quit racing and I never got a chance to see him race in person. Money is no obstacle, mainly because I have none, and I would miss final exams to see this.

I have been saying that NASCAR is the professional wrestling of the motorsport's world for years now. This just kind of proves it.

I honestly do not care who wins. Danica's record speaks for itself, and so does Richard Petty's (even if it is dated).

I see this happening in some hokey way on a go-kart track somewhere. It will be a media circus. There will be a winner and a loser, then we will all forget about it in 9 months.

It also seems like Danica is now in this (racing in general) to transition into a different position in the next few years. Team owner, head of a racing team, some training school, or just a race "analyst" that will commentate and call races on TV.
